Server Based Distribution Groups

Microsoft Exchange Server uses group objects in Active Directory that have many benefits to both system administrators and E-Mail users:

  • Distribution Groups are stored in Active Directory and are automatically replicated to all domain controllers, thus highly available and inherit all of the management atributes of other objects in the directory.
  • Full support for recursively nesting groups inside of other groups.
  • When a message is sent to a group, the server expands the list, even if there are thousands of members
  • Groups can be shared across all email users, if desired.

Personal Distribution Lists in Outlook are different in that they are stored in the Outlook Address Book. They are expanded at the client computer and can not be easily shared.
